Floyd County No Longer Gassing

Congratulations, Floyd County!

Floyd County joins the growing list of jurisdictions in Virginia that have eliminated the gas chamber! Wonderful work!

Notice of the transition from using gas chambers to euthanasia by injection took place over several months, and the gas chamber was removed in April.

Many contributed to this effort, and thanks go to all of you. Included are:

  • members of the Floyd County Humane Society who contributed funding for the euthanasia room

It’s especially commendable that Floyd County elected to set aside a separate euthanasia room since that is by far the most humane way to administer EBI.

  • the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies which paid for the equipment in the euthanasia room

  • the Floyd County ACOs who spent many hours in training to be able to do EBI

  • Floyd County which matched funds from the Floyd County Humane Society

See the new Virginia euthanasia regulations that became effective 11/1/04 by clicking here: Euthanasia Directive 79-1

Unfortunately, Virginia regulations still allow gassing animals.

Pulaski County No Longer Gassing

On April 9, 2005, Pulaski County opened the "Pulaski County Animal Shelter and Humane Education Center" in Dublin, VA. This facility replaces the county's 30-year old facility, and more importantly, it has no gas chamber!

The Pulaski County Humane Society has been raising money since 2003 for the new shelter, and they are raising additional funds for 16 dog kennels and a Spay/Neuter clinic.

If you would like to donate to this worthy cause, please go to their web site at:

http://www.funds4pets.org/

The PCHS credits the Pulaski Board of Supervisors and the compassionate animal control officers of Pulaski County for the decision to get rid of the county's gas chamber. Effective letters written to the local paper by Pulaski residents also played an important part!

Bob Kane and the VHDOA: Latest Alarm

Bob Kane recently released the Virginia Hunting Dog Owner's Association (VHDOA) endorsements for the upcoming open seat and primary races in Virginia. To see Mr. Kane's full list of endorsements and his "grading" of the various candidates, please go here:

http://vhdoa.uplandbirddog.com/05primaryendorsements.html

The VHDOA also sent out a questionnaire to candidates. The VHDOA questionnaire can be read here:

http://vhdoa.uplandbirddog.com/quest05.html

The following is Don Marro's response to Bob Kane's endorsements:

Here is Bob Kane, spokesman for the VHDOA, again sounding the alarm on threats to Virginia's way of life and cultural traditions.

As defender of these traditions, Mr. Kane has crafted an"enemies list", which includes the HSUS, VVAW and PETA. He has also prepared a questionnaire to determine which political hopefuls will protect Virginia's dogs and hunters from their enemies, of which VVAW is Public Enemy #2 (behind HSUS).

Since Mr. Kane believes his candidates will thwart VVAW "designs" (and since Mr. Kane refuses to engage in a dialogue with us to dispel his silly fear of VVAW legislative goals), you might wish to contact the candidates he has endorsed to see if their views are consistent with ours, and if not, to tell them why they should be.

And please, when you do, copy Mr. Kane. Who knows, he may actually have an open mind.

A Light Lost - submitted by Liz Clancy Ross

You were frightened,
but you wanted to love.
You distrusted,
but there were moments when - almost - you would rest your head.
You were always on guard,
but you dreamed of learning to play.
You knew no one would protect you,
but there were thoughts, or memories, of having a friend.

And we wanted to rescue you, to let you know you were safe.
If we had stroked your lovely coat just one more time.....
If we had whispered just the right words in your ear.....
If we had run with you just a little faster, or more often, in the grass.....
Then maybe you would have been able to believe.

We will never know if we failed you,
or if life had failed you too harshly before we met.
We will not know if you heard us and couldn't answer,
or if you had lost the power to hear before we spoke.
We cannot know if you will forgive and wait for us at the Bridge,
But we know that we will look for you.
You, also, are one of ours -- and we loved you as best we could.

22 Cats and Kittens - submitted by Tammy Javier

The folks at the Franklin County Humane Society recently pulled 22 cats and kittens (mostly kittens) from the Franklin County pound that would have been gassed.

They are all in foster homes now, but they all need forever homes.

Can you help?

For more information, please contact Tammy Javier at (540) 493-1414 or by email at gypclady@aol.com.
