There are two topics this time, both classified ads:

1. 10 BETTY WEAKLANDS NEEDED
VVAW seeks 10 activists of the Betty Weakland model.
Betty Weakland has taken it upon herself to call and visit shelters and pounds she’s never been to before in an effort to spread the VVAW word and broaden participation. She is getting information, she is developing supporters, and she is listening to what is happening in places new to her.
She is making a difference.
We seek a minimum of 10 more Betty Weaklands all around Virginia.
duties:
. reach out to animal control facilities and shelters in person and by phone within driving distance of your home
. explain the focus of VVAW and how its success will benefit companion animals and those working with them
. convert strangers to friends of VVAW and get them to be willing to listen and involved with VVAW initiatives
background requirements:
. enjoy human and animal interaction
. phone required to call, talk, listen
. car required with willingness to drive to unfamiliar shelters and pounds
. willingness to hand out VVAW brochures and Don’s letter to the editor called Virginia Has Too Many Pets
. understand the VVAW goals and be capable of articulating them in a friendly, persuasive way
. capable of reporting new contacts and how to continue to reach them
compensation:
. dog kisses and cat rubs
. sometimes a brush off
. sometimes a cry at the sadness
. always the conviction that you will make a difference

2. A DOZEN DEDICATED TO ELIMINATION OF GAS CHAMBERS IN VIRGINIA
VVAW seeks a dozen activists to eliminate the remaining six gas chambers in Virginia:
Appomattox County
Buchanan County
Lee County
Martinsville City
Scott County
Wythe County

duties:
. convince local leadership that using gas is barbaric, dangerous, inhumane, out of touch with the 21st century, and paints a picture of their jurisdiction that is not flattering
local officials to convince include
. members of the General Assembly representing that jurisdiction
. County Administrator/City Manager
. members of the local Board of Supervisors
. head of local Industrial Development Agency
. head of county Chamber of Commerce
. chair of local Republican party
. chair of local Democratic party
other influential locals to persuade include
. public school administrators
. church leaders and officials
. humane societies, SPCAs, or rescues
other officials
. State Secretary of Agriculture
. State Veterinarian
. Governor
. convene a town meeting which you (and others from VVAW) organize, host, and promote
background requirements:
. unflagging and focused determination to have the right and humane thing made the law of the state
. ability to find people in each jurisdiction to stand up against gas and make a cohesive, effective group to speak out against gas
. be able to meet with the media, write letters, develop press releases
. ability and willingness to travel to jurisdictions using gas, speaking to Boards of Supervisors, heading town meetings, energizing those who fear retribution
compensation:
. one more place stops using gas
. compensation gets better when the second and third stop
. you’ve worked yourself into retirement when all 6 stop
