Alert 7/7/08 Vick Dogs, Meeting Minutes, Meeting Correction
Vick Dogs
There is a wonderful long article about the Vick dogs with good photos in today’s Washington Post.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/06/AR2008070602351.html?hpid=topnews
There are reasons to say thank you to many involved in the transformation of the Vick dogs, but none of this would have happened without the action of U.S. District Judge Henry E. Hudson who ordered each dog to be evaluated (see paragraph 3 of the article) individually.
Please thank Judge Hudson. Unfortunately, there is no public email address we have been able to find, but there is a fax.
His fax: 804-916-2216
His US mail address:
The Honorable Judge Henry E. Hudson, U. S. District Judge
U. S. District Court, Eastern Virginia
1000 E. Main Street; Suite 112
Richmond, VA 23219
Or write a letter to the editor in your local paper and thank him there.
Please continue your vigilance against animal fighting. It still hurts incredibly to read in this article of some specifics – like the Vick dog Mike-Mike who lost after fighting for three hours and five minutes. Can you imagine fighting that long? Can you imagine the pain and horror? And the article does not say what happened to the dog after he lost. Remember, Mr. Vick isn’t the only person who gloried in dogfighting. It continues today. You can help eliminate.
If there are stories to tell about successes, please send them on. If there are instances where failures took place for lack of manpower or funding, send those on as well. This is a battle we can all fight.
Meeting Minutes
The meeting minutes from the first three regional meetings are posted on the website:
www.VirginiaVotersForAnimalWelfare.com. Once there, find the blue side bar, and in the side bar find the section about meeting minutes and click there. This will give you a good idea of the focus this season.
Meeting Correction
Emails have been sent several times in the last few days by Jeanette Allard of St. Seton’s Orphaned Animals. The emails contain erroneous information about the meeting in Fredericksburg.
The incorrect emails indicate a group called “Virginia Federation of Animal Welfare” is hosting the Fredericksburg meeting. There is no such group as far as we know.
The emails also provide the wrong date.
To correct:
The meeting in Fredericksburg will be on Sunday, 8/10/08, and will run from 11 am to 1 pm.
The meeting will be held, courtesy of Joe Wilson, at the PermaTreat Building located at 505 Lafayette Boulevard in Fredericksburg.
The meeting is co-sponsored by the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies and Virginians for Animal Welfare/Virginia Voters for Animal Welfare with a presentation by the Legislative Liaison of VACA (Virginia Animal Control Association).
There will be a review of the very successful 2008 session of the General Assembly, and there will be input from those at the meeting about what issues to tackle in the upcoming 2009 session.
Please come to the Fredericksburg meeting (or any other meetings – they are listed on the website), and please let us know you will be there.
Thank you for continuing to work.
Lillian Clancy and Don Marro
PS: Don’t forget to come to the meeting on this Sunday, 7/13, in Afton (Nelson County). This will be the most convenient meeting for those in Charlottesville and Albemarle County and will pick up Nelson County and more.
And there is a BBQ and a sanctuary tour – and pot belly pigs to enjoy on Sunday!
