Alert 4/5/07

Another VVAW meeting in Richmond - will you come?

Please come to the second meeting of the Richmond group!

The meeting will be on Sunday, 4/15/07, from 11 am to 1 pm at the same place the first meeting was held:

Rockwood Park Nature Center; 3401 Courthouse Road; Richmond

NOTE:  You needn't have attended the earlier Richmond meeting (3/18/07) to attend

this one.  All are welcome!

This meeting goals:

1.   decide what issues will be pursued

2.   determine what information is needed to pursue them

3.   decide who will collect what information

4.   get meeting attendees to commit to doing something specific with the information -

what steps will be taken

5.   select someone to be the point person for each issue

Please come with the following information in hand:

1.   know your state delegate and your state senator

2.   know whether that person is seeking re-election in November; remember that every

seat in the General Assembly is up for election in November

3.   know if anyone in addition to the current legislator has announced his/her candidacy

4.   know who your representative is on your county Board of Supervisor (or your City

Council) and when that person is up for re-election

5.   know when/where your county Board of Supervisors/City Council meets

Anticipate that in 2008 VVAW will most likely promote the same legislative package as

was pursued in January.  The list of bills is at the bottom of this message for ease of recollection.  For the most part, the issues the bills address can be either implemented on a state-wide basis or be local.  Obviously, local focus accomplishes less than statewide implementation, but a local focus could be successful and generate a grass roots momentum that spreads to other jurisdictions.  Your call.

And if the 2007 bills don't cover issues you think are important, bring up your idea during

the meeting.

As always, we like to know who is coming so we have enough seats, coffee, etc.  Let us

know.

Lillian Clancy/Don Marro

PS:  Some of you have asked to learn more about the way a bill becomes law.  We will

try to get "A Bill if Born" put together and out to you before the 4/15 meeting.
