501c Projects

We anticipate having three corporations courtesy of Swidler Berlin, a Washington DC law firm donating considerable legal work for us courtesy of Sandy Echeverry, a VVAW member.

1. 501c3

This is a tax deductible, charitable foundation.

Financial contributions are tax deductible.

This will be called “Virginians for Animal Welfare” (eliminating the word “voters” here).

We will raise money for:

  • spay/neuter programs
  • upgrading the animal control function
  • eliminating gas chambers
  • staff person working half time
  • establish groups in support of public pounds where no such groups exist
  • taking over the operation of public pounds which have been historically out of compliance with Virginia law

We will want a staff person working on these issues half time.

2. 501c4

This is Virginia Voters for Animal Welfare.

This is the lobbying group, and contributions are not tax deductible.

Funds here will be used to push VVAW legislative initiatives, or the legislation of others VVAW supports.

Note that as a 501c4, we can lobby legislation, but we cannot “electioneer” – i.e., support or oppose specific candidates.

We may want to hire a professional lobbyist. We will also need a staff person working half time to support this effort.

3. PAC

The PAC (Political Action Committee) may be the most important element of VVAW.

This is the VVAW vehicle to offset the political clout of organized opposition groups and get candidates elected who VVAW supports.

Contributions are not tax deductible.

It is not known yet whether there will be manpower requirements for the PAC.
